Learning about Estimation States

The Quantum::Estimation Plugin supports an advanced estimation flow, where available actions depend on the current state of the estimation:

Disabled

Disabled estimations will not show in the issue view and will not be considered to calculate statistics. They will simply act as if they are not existing.

Available Actions

Non. The estimation is locked and hidden.

Estimation Design

The estimation process starts with the ESTIMATION_DESIGN status. In ESTIMATION_DESIGN you will create your estimation tasks and plan your estimation by e.g. setting due dates and other estimation criteria. As soon as you a ready, start the ESTIMATING phase by selecting the Start Estimation action in the issue menu. As an alternative action, you will have the option to start the QUICK ESTIMATING mode (if quick estimating is enabled in the configuration).

Available Actions

  • Create Estimation Tasks

  • Change Estimation Tasks

  • Delete Estimation Tasks

  • Set Estimation Due Date

Disabled Actions

  • Create Estimates (estimating)

Estimating

In the ESTIMATING phase, the assigned estimators will give their estimates based on the defined estimation tasks.

Available Actions

  • Create Estimates

  • Delete own estimates

  • Delete estimates from other users (if enabled in the permission settings)

Disabled Actions

  • Create Estimation Tasks

  • Change Estimation Tasks

  • Delete Estimation Tasks

  • Set Estimation Due Date

  • Showing aggregated estimates (depending on settings)

  • Showing estimates from other users (depending on settings)

Quick Estimating

In the QUICK ESTIMATING phase, estimators will be able to give estimates. No estimation task ar required to give estimates. Instead, a new Assigned Estimator Task will automatically be created.

Available Actions

  • Create Estimates

  • Delete own estimates

  • Delete estimates from other users (if enabled in the permission settings)

Disabled Actions

  • Create Estimation Tasks

  • Change Estimation Tasks

  • Delete Estimation Tasks

  • Set Estimation Due Date

  • Showing aggregated estimates (depending on settings)

  • Showing estimates from other users (depending on settings)

Replan

After starting the ESTIMATING or QUICK ESTIMATING phase it is not possible to get back to the ESTIMATION_DESIGN state directly. Instead, you have the option to enter the REPLAN state. As with the ESTIMATION_DESIGN state, you will be able to create, update or delete estimation tasks, but only if the estimation tasks do not yet have estimates.

Available Actions

  • Create Estimation Tasks

  • Change Estimation Tasks (only if the task does not have estimates)

  • Delete Estimation Tasks (only if the task does not have estimates)

  • Set Estimation Due Date

Disabled Actions

  • Create Estimates (estimating)

  • Showing aggregated estimates (depending on settings)

  • Showing estimates from other users (depending on settings)

Estimated

When entering the ESTIMATED state, the estimation process is (successfully) finished. The aggregated values on the estimation level will be calculated and copied to the issue time tracking or story points fields (depending on the configuration).

Available Actions

  • Showing aggregated estimates (depending on settings)

  • Showing estimates from other users (depending on settings)

Disabled Actions

  • Create Estimation Tasks

  • Change Estimation Tasks

  • Delete Estimation Tasks

  • Set Estimation Due Date

  • Change due date

  • Deleting estimates.

Failed

When finishing estimations with the Finish Estimation Workflow Action will either enter the ESTIMATED or the FAILED state, depending on their fulfillment of the estimation requirements.

Available Actions

  • None.

Disabled Actions

  • Create Estimation Tasks

  • Change Estimation Tasks

  • Delete Estimation Tasks

  • Set Estimation Due Date

  • Change due date

  • Deleting estimates.

  • Showing aggregated estimates

  • Showing estimates from other users
